Huron University College appoints new Principal

Dr. Stephen McClatchie, Provost and Vice-President, Academic and Research, Mount Allison University, has been appointed the new Principal of Huron University College, effective July 1, 2011.

Last year McClatchie was reappointed to second term as Provost and Vice-President, a position he has held since 2006. During his time at Mount Allison, he led the development of a student recruitment and retention plan that helped to increase student numbers and resulted in the creation of the new position of Vice-President, Student Affairs; oversaw the development of an Academic Renewal Plan that is currently being implemented; and spearheaded the establishment of the Ron Joyce Centre for Business Studies.

McClatchie, a native Londoner, said, "I am both excited and honoured to have been chosen as Huron University College's next Principal. Ever since I was an undergraduate student at Western, I have been aware of Huron's reputation for academic excellence and I look forward to working with faculty, staff, and students to ensure that it continues to embody the best of liberal arts and theological post-secondary education.

In announcing the appointment, Tim Duncanson, Chair of Huron's Executive Board stated, "Dr. McClatchie brings a wealth of experience and solid background to the position of Principal. We are very pleased he will be joining Huron and look forward to working with him to advance the priorities of the University."

McClatchie received his PhD in Systematic Musicology from The University of Western Ontario in 1994. He is an active scholar in the fields of musicology and music history and has published two books: The Mahler Family Letters (Oxford University Press, 2006; paperback 2009; German edition, Weidle Verlag, 2006) and Analyzing Wagner's Operas: Alfred Lorenz and German Nationalist Ideology (University of Rochester Press, 1998); as well as numerous journal articles, reviews, and presentations. McClatchie is a strong believer in the importance of an academic administrator to remain connected to the academic enterprise for both personal and institutional credibility.

Prior to his Mount Allison appointment, McClatchie was Associate Vice-President (Academic) at the University of Regina, where he also held the positions of Acting Vice-President (Research) and Assistant Dean of Fine Arts.

McClatchie succeeds Dr. Ramona Lumpkin who left Huron in September 2010 to assume the position of President and Vice-Chancellor for Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. Dr. Trish Fulton has served as Interim Principal since October 1st.

Huron University College is the founding college of The University of Western Ontario with which it remains affiliated. Huron has a current enrollment of approximately 1,300 students in the liberal arts and Theology.

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS FROM YOUR BISHOPS

It's an all out sprint to the finish! The presents are wrapped, dinner is planned, travel is arranged! And now it is time . . . time to become wrapped in the true love story of Christmas! As Silent Night wafts gently from the church; as the soft candle light flickers on the walls that have witnessed this celebration many times; as the procession begins and the assembled rise as one: We are here to worship Christ Our Lord!

The story is so familiar and comfortable; we can almost see ourselves suspended above the stable watching the great event unfold. After all the harried preparations we now find the time to sit and enjoy the peace of Jesus Christ. It is a peace that dwells in our hearts everyday of every year. But somehow at Christmas, it seems to swell up and encompass our lives. It is a moment of pure joy as we know that Jesus has again entered our world through the humble stable, and that His love continues to nudge us softly on the journey of life. Is there anything more wonderful than the emotion of Christmas in Church?

As people around the world gather in worship and celebration, may we add our voices to the symphony of praise. May the peace, love and joy of the Christ Child be yours this Christmas and may 2011 be a time of faith filled growth and excitement!

We wish you a Merry Christmas.

+Bob and +Terry

Silent Night Campaign - Military Ordinate

SILENT NIGHT CAMPAIGN

Imagine a diocese that covers 3.8 million square miles ( 9.9 million square kms). A vast diocese stretching from coast to coast to coast yet served by just 46 full time priests, and 32 part-time clergy). A diocese in which clergy and people are often sent on mission trips around the globe – often to some of the most dangerous places at the most dangerous times.

A diocese which has one bishop – who cares for the clergy and people, and who often makes pastoral and liturgical visits to their communities (both at home and away). A bishop, who in addition to this Episcopal ministry to this flock, is also a member of the Canadian House of Bishops and a national Interfaith Group, and who consults regularly with the Government of Canada.

Now imagine that bishop, in that diocese, providing ministry and support and leadership ~ ~ in exchange for only his/her expenses. No stipend, no salary. While the clergy receive stipends for their ministry, the bishop serves in a more-or-less volunteer capacity.

The diocese is the Military Ordinariate.

The current Silent Night campaign, strives to uphold this ministry by adding to the Trust Fund which will one day allow for a full time Bishop Ordinary, and support the chaplains in their ministry.

At the call of our Primate, Anglicans are being encouraged to stand and sing Silent Night in support of the ministry of military chaplains . Where possible congregations are encouraged to film their singing and post it on the Anglican Church of Canada’s YouTube sight by December 14th (where it will be edited into a video which will be released close to Christmas) . We are also being challenged to donate $2 per person every time we sing this hymn .... and the money forwarded to General Synod for this initiative.

Historically the bishop to the ordinary has been a current diocesan bishop, or recently retired bishop. The demands of this ministry require a bishop whose sole ministry is to the Ordinariate.

The Silent Night campaign, will help turn this dream into a reality.

The Rev’d Canon Rob Towler, Diocese of Huron Coordinator, Silent Night Project
